Preparing for your visit

Best time to visit Southern California

Southern California coastline is known for having perfect weather year-round. Sunny San Diego and Los Angeles have 9-10 months of sunshine and 2 months of cloudy weather. During the months of May and June (also known as June Gloom), the majority of the days include cloudy weather that could break for sunny, warm conditions.

As you make your way east, the weather is warm during the Winter & Spring. During the Summer and Fall, the weather can be hot and dry. Be prepared if you plan to come during this time of year to pack plenty of water.

Because this road trip includes beaches, mountains, and desert landscapes, the best time for a 7 Day Southern California Road Trip is:

March–April

Temperatures are mild on the coast (low to mid-70s °F) and comfortable inland (mid-70s °F), creating ideal conditions for hiking and exploring.

The Perfect 7 Day Itinerary

Day 1 – 2: Los Angeles

The City of Angels. Los Angeles is one of California’s most iconic cities. With sandy beaches, snowcapped mountains, delicious food and fun nightlife, Los Angeles has something for everyone.

Things to do in Los Angeles

1. Tour Hollywood Boulevard

Nothing says LA like Hollywood. With the Hollywood Walk of Fame, Hollywood Wax Museum and Madame Tussauds Hollywood, Hollywood Boulevard is a can’t miss spot on your journey.

2. Spend a day at the beach

With iconic beaches such as Huntington Beach, Laguna Beach and Newport Beach, Los Angeles is the perfect place to enjoy the sunshine. Some beaches have volleyball nets set up for public play, or surfboard rentals if you want to catch some gnarly waves!

3. Ski or snow tube at Big Bear

Located about 2 hours from Los Angeles International Airport, Big Bear Mountain Resort has all kinds of winter activities for everyone. The mountain is open from November to April (tho dates can change based on snow) and includes activities such as:

  • Snow Tubing
  • Skiing
  • Snowboarding
  • Snow Shoeing
  • Zip Lining
4. Hike to Runyon Canyon

Runyon Canyon is a fun, easy hike for all ages.

This hike includes views of:

5. Walk the Malibu Coastline

Malibu, located just north of downtown LA, is one of the most beautiful areas in LA County. Point Dumme Boardwalk is an easy trail with breathtaking views of the Pacific coastline. You may even catch a glimpse of a pod of dolphins!

6. Visit the Santa Monica Pier

The Santa Monica Pier is a must see spot! With carnival rides and beautiful sunsets, enjoy an evening riding the ferris wheel watching the sun set over the Pacific Ocean.

7. Corgi Beach Day

This is a personal favorite of ours! Occurring multiple times a year (dates vary year to year) at Huntington Beach, you have Corgi Beach Day. Dog lovers of all kinds bring Corgis and other dog breeds to hang out, show off their costumes and compete in contests. This is a free event open to the public. Just show up and pet some dogs! Visit SoCal Corgi Beach Day for more information on dates!

Day 3 – 4: Sequoia & Kings Canyon National Park

With towering trees unlike anything on Earth, Sequoia National Park is one of memories you will never forget. Named for the Sequoia trees that habit the park, Sequoia National Park offers hiking, camping and plenty of sight-seeing. You can drive thru the entire park in about a day, but we recommend taking your time and enjoying the sights. Some of the trees in the park are several hundred years old and are breathtaking up close.

    We recommend:

    • Spending 1 day at Sequoia National Park
    • Spending 1 day at Kings Canyon National Park

    Things to do:

    1. Visit the General Sherman Tree

Known as the “one of the largest trees on the planet”, the General Sherman Tree is a hot spot for tourists visiting Sequoia National Park. The tree is not the tallest in the world, but one of the largest in diameter ever measured (11m or 36 feet). With an age of 2300 – 2700 years, this is one of the oldest recorded trees on the planet.

    2. Drive thru Tunnel Log

A very popular tourist destination, Tunnel Log gives a different perspective to the sheer size of these trees. Take some time and enjoy the quick drive through the log and don’t forget to take some photos!

    3. Visit Tunnel Rock

At the entrance to the park, you will find Tunnel Rock. Tunnel Rock used to be part of the original road through the park. After years of incidents involving trucks and the rock, it was repurposed as a tourist site.

    4. Visit Kings Canyon Overlook

With one of the best views of the canyon off the main road, Kings Canyon Overlook provides the perfect view of the sheer size of Kings Canyon.

    5. See Panoramic Point Overview

Another great view of the canyon as you drive towards Kings Canyon. Panoramic Point is a great place to go for sunset or sunrise.

    6. Hiking

Kings Canyon and Sequoia offer a number of hikes with varying difficulty. Some of the most popular hikes are Mist Falls Trail, General Grant Loop Trail, and Roaring River Falls, all of which offer spectacular views!

    7. Drive the Kings Canyon Scenic Byway

Similar to the Generals Highway, the Kings Canyon Scenic Byway offers picturesque views of the national park. Take your time, enjoy the ride, and take in the breathtaking experience!

Day 5: Joshua Tree National Park

      Things to Do:

      1. Stargazing

One of our favorite things to do in Joshua Tree is enjoy the clear skis at night and look at the stars. During the summer, the Milky Way is visible in the middle of the night. When laying back and looking up at the stars, you will see a sky full of lights and the occasional shooting star! There are certain spots in the park that are best for stargazing! These include:

      • Skull Rock
      • Cap Rock
      • Arch Rock.
      2. Rock Climbing

If you are an avid rock climber, Joshua Tree is the place for you! Many people come to Joshua Tree to free climb the boulders. There is even some basic rock terrain you can climb on for a nice view of the park!

        3. Hiking

Joshua Tree is very popular for all the different hikes in the park. Below is a list of the several hikes:

          • Skull Rock – Getting its name from the popular rock that looks like a skull, the Skull Rock Trail is an easy trail that follows the main road through Joshua Tree. Once you reach Skull Rock, don’t forget to take your picture sitting on top of the skull!
          • Hall of Horrors – For someone who is not an avid rock climber, Hall of Horrors is a great mix of hiking and rock climbing. The narrow passageways and tricky terrain are fun but be careful!
          • Arch Rock Trail – Getting its name from the big Arch Rock about 0.5 mile into the trail, this is a nice easy, walking trail to enjoy while in Joshua Tree.
